Types of Vegan Diets

There are different types of vegan diets. The most common are:

  • Whole food vegan diet: A diet based on a wide variety of whole plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
  •  Raw vegan diet: A vegan diet based on raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, or plant foods cooked at temperatures below 118°F.
  • Low-carb vegan diet: The 80/10/10 diet type limits fat-rich plants such as nuts and avocados and is instead a raw food vegan diet based heavily on raw fruit and greens. It is also called a low-fat, raw food vegan diet or fruit diet.
  • High-carb vegan diet: A low-fat, high-carb vegan diet similar to 80/10/10 but focusing on cooked starches such as potatoes, rice and corn instead of fruit.
  • Raw till 4: 80/10/10 and a low-fat vegan diet inspired by starch solution. Raw food is consumed until 16:00 with the option of plant-based cooked food for dinner.
  • Junk food vegan: It is a vegan diet devoid of whole plant foods that relies heavily on fake-looking meats and cheeses, french fries, vegan desserts, and other heavily processed vegan foods.
Although there are several variations of the vegan diet, most scientific studies rarely distinguish between different vegan diets.
